It’s worse than Carillion: our outsourced schools are leaving parents frozen out | Aditya Chakrabortty
Primary schools are being turned over to academy trusts with no accountability, and against the wishes of those who know the children best This is a story they don’t want you to know. Much of it had to be prised from the grip of officials in Whitehall and the local town hall. Yet it demands to be told, because it shows how democracy and accountability are being drained from our schools, and how a surreal battle now rages over who knows what’s best for a child: the parents and teachers, or remote officials and financiers. The school in question is Waltham Holy Cross primary in Essex. Helping on a school run last week, I found an entire small world. It was the last day of term, and teachers joined hands to form a human arch. The bell rang and all those leaving to start secondary ran under their teachers’ arms. Parents whooped while staff hugged overwhelmed pupils. There was barely a dry eye in the playground. Continue reading... from The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/...

ALIVE | Canada 4K by Flo Nick
https://vimeo.com/251646742
I travelled 5500 km in six weeks exploring the vast landscapes of British Columbia and Alberta in Canada, always looking to place my camera gear in the most beautiful sceneries possible. With 54.000 single photos shot along the way I created ALIVE - a timelapse film which takes you on a vivid journey through wild forests, along the shores of crystal lakes and up the hills of massive mountains. By making this project, I want to raise awareness of our wonderful planet earth which we have the privilege to be part of. That’s why we have to take responsibility for it - for the place where we are alive. ____________________________________ Timelapse & Edit by Florian Nick Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/flo.nick/ Contact: flo.nick[@]gmx.de *all footage available for licensing* Music & Sounddesign: Julian Lindenmann - http://www.julianlindenmann.com Big thanks to my sponsors for your generous support: eMotimo - https://www.emotimo.com Arc’teryx - https://www.arcteryx.com Talus Lodge - http://www.taluslodge.com LRTimelapse - https://lrtimelapse.com All footage was shot with the Spectrum ST4 4-axis Motion Controller provided by eMotimo. 'AILA'AU: Forest Eater by Page Films
'AILA'AU: Forest Eater by Page Films https://vimeo.com/pagefilms/foresteater Recommended to watch in 4K or HD in dark environment with quality sound. 'AILA'AU: Forest Eater is a short film that takes viewers on a journey through the infamous 2018 eruption of Kilauea's lower east rift zone on the Big Island of Hawaii. The film uses select footage from Lance Page, Michael Lienau and G. Brad Lewis with a very special shot by Adrian Hein and blends together a rich visual feast. Featuring Sam Cossman in full lava suit at lava rivers edge, testing out C-THRU from Qwake Technologies. As the visuals dazzle, the original music and sound design helmed by Stefan Scott Nelson and Kevin Dippold creates a dark dreamy melody that nicely accents the incredible, beautiful and bizarre wonder of nature. The otherworldly sound mix is accompanied by Stephanie Dosen's powerful vocals blended with a handful of other choice musical contributions. Rather than use a more literal docu...
The Killers at Glastonbury 2019 review – anthemic headliners triumph
Pyramid stage Brandon Flowers and co – with a little help from the Pet Shop Boys, Johnny Marr and the pyrotechnics department – provide one of those special Glastonbury Moments Catch up on Saturday highlights on our liveblog A band that obviously have nothing in common musically with Stormzy, the Killers nevertheless share a problem: before they play, a shadow hangs over their headline performance. One rumour circulating around the audience is that they were the third choice for the Saturday night headlining slot, drafted in after big name heritage artists declined to sign up. Whether that’s true or not, something about Brandon Flowers’ demeanour onstage, at least initially, suggests a man who isn’t entirely sure how things are going to pan out. “At the end of this show, I don’t want anyone to say ‘They got away with it,’” he offers, early on in the band’s set. “I want people to look up to this stage and say: ‘Those are the sons of bitches that did it.’” Certainly, you’re stuck by...
'So surreal': Hong Kongers take up self-defence classes in wake of thug attacks
Free lessons teach how to stop punches and stick attacks after violence instills deep concern in community “If you see attackers, you must be armed with basic skills to save your own lives,” Henry Chong, a sports therapist and karate expert, told his first self-defence class. The class, which took place two days after the attack on unarmed commuters in the rural town of Yuen Long , was attended by mostly women aged 20-60.
