Pomp and ceremony in Beijing could be overshadowed by unrest that has roiled Hong Kong for 17 weeks

As the flag raising ceremony started at 8am local time, a dozen protesters staged a demonstration in Wanchai in the presence of riot police.

In Hong Kong, protests have already begun.
As celebrations start in Beijing to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of Communist China, pro-democracy protesters begin to rally in Hong Kong. By 8am pepper-spray was already being used.
