Primary schools are being turned over to academy trusts with no accountability, and against the wishes of those who know the children best This is a story they don’t want you to know. Much of it had to be prised from the grip of officials in Whitehall and the local town hall. Yet it demands to be told, because it shows how democracy and accountability are being drained from our schools, and how a surreal battle now rages over who knows what’s best for a child: the parents and teachers, or remote officials and financiers. The school in question is Waltham Holy Cross primary in Essex. Helping on a school run last week, I found an entire small world. It was the last day of term, and teachers joined hands to form a human arch. The bell rang and all those leaving to start secondary ran under their teachers’ arms. Parents whooped while staff hugged overwhelmed pupils. There was barely a dry eye in the playground. Continue reading... from The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/...

The Guardian view on the gig economy: rights need enforcing | Editorial
Proper patrolling of workers’ rights is welcome. If the losers in the gig economy are to be helped, ministers must be tougher The increased level of intervention by the government in the labour market since Theresa May became prime minister is both rational and humane. The UK economy is too reliant on low-wage, low-skilled jobs, many of which are also insecure. Figures published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation this month suggest one in eight workers (4 million people) are now classified as poor. Working conditions and low pay are causing real suffering, with ambulances called to Amazon’s UK warehouses 600 times in three years . DPD delivery driver Don Lane died after missing medical appointments because he feared being fined for taking time off work. The review of the gig economy by thinktanker Matthew Taylor last year produced 53 rec...

NHS says system will struggle if more than 28 patients need artificial lung treatment
England only has 15 available beds for adults to treat the most severe respiratory failure and will struggle to cope if there are more than 28 patients who need them if the number of coronavirus cases rises, according to the government and NHS documents.
Ministers have revealed in parliamentary answers that there are 15 available beds for adult extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment at five centres across England. The government said this could be increased in an emergency. There were 30 such beds in total available during the 2018-19 winter flu season.

'AILA'AU: Forest Eater by Page Films https://vimeo.com/pagefilms/foresteater Recommended to watch in 4K or HD in dark environment with quality sound. 'AILA'AU: Forest Eater is a short film that takes viewers on a journey through the infamous 2018 eruption of Kilauea's lower east rift zone on the Big Island of Hawaii. The film uses select footage from Lance Page, Michael Lienau and G. Brad Lewis with a very special shot by Adrian Hein and blends together a rich visual feast. Featuring Sam Cossman in full lava suit at lava rivers edge, testing out C-THRU from Qwake Technologies. As the visuals dazzle, the original music and sound design helmed by Stefan Scott Nelson and Kevin Dippold creates a dark dreamy melody that nicely accents the incredible, beautiful and bizarre wonder of nature. The otherworldly sound mix is accompanied by Stephanie Dosen's powerful vocals blended with a handful of other choice musical contributions. Rather than use a more literal docu...
